This has helped a lot of parents, who before this time, could not afford to send their children to school, to now have the opportunity to do so. However, because of the poverty in the country, where some families live below two dollars a day, it is a challenge for some of these parents to afford and provide the basic needs that ensure that these children can be successful in school. Basic needs like exercise books, textbooks, transportation, housing, uniforms, and writing utensils, are all difficult for these parents to afford. Because of these, and some other related issues, although the government provides free quality education, some families still find it very hard to send their children to school.
In fact, we had a testimony from one parent, Miss Kamara, who said that she has four kids, but can only afford to send one of them to school because she cannot afford uniforms, shoes, writing utensils (paper, pens, pencils) and transportation, for her other three children to attend school. In fact, this is more difficult for single parent homes. So, Macpherson Foundation seeks to provide the basic needs to children who have reached the age for schooling, thereby, helping parents to be able to send their children to school.

Catering to the needs of Children with Mental and Intellectual Disabilities
In Sierra Leone, families with children who exhibit symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, are often labeled as witches or wizards, and victimized, abandoned, ridiculed, poisoned, drowned, or totally isolated from other children of the same family. Some of these children are taken to churches to cast out the demons of witchcraft in them. They are most times associated with ill luck for the family and a bad omen.
The children, often accused of witchcraft or wizardry and victimized, exhibit uncommon physical, mental, social, and behavioral characteristics, which may include acting up with intense tantrums, engaging in self-injurious behaviors, aggression toward others, being obstinate, living in seclusion, engaging in ritualistic behaviors, do not startle at loud noises, or are over sensitive to loud noises, and many more. In fact, in some extreme cases, children who have allergies, asthma, epilepsy, digestive disorders, persistent viral infections, feeding disorders, sensory integration dysfunction, and sleeping disorders, are seen as devilish children of the family.
